HowPronounceIt offers pronunciation guidance for general educational purposes.

Pronunciation varies

There is rarely a single correct way to say a word. Pronunciation differs between countries, regions, communities and individual speakers, and it changes over time. Our American and British forms describe common standard pronunciations, not the only acceptable ones.

Synthesized audio

The audio is generated by text-to-speech technology. It is usually accurate, but it can occasionally stress the wrong syllable or pick the wrong pronunciation of a word with two meanings, such as record or live. Where the audio and the written guide disagree, trust the written guide and let us know.

Definitions

Meanings and examples come from WordNet and are simplified for quick reference. They are not a substitute for a full dictionary.

No professional advice

The site is not a substitute for a qualified teacher or speech therapist.
