Pronunciation FAQ

Quick answers about using HowPronounceIt, reading the results and practicing your pronunciation.

Using the tool

How do I hear how a word is pronounced?

Type the word into the box on the homepage and press Pronounce. The word plays right away in the accent you chose, and you can replay it in American or British English with the play buttons.

Can I slow the audio down?

Yes. Press SLOW next to either accent, or set Speed to Slow so every word plays at a gentler pace.

Can I choose a male or female voice?

Yes. Use the Voice setting to switch between a female and a male voice. Your choice is remembered on this device.

What if I misspell the word?

The tool suggests the closest real words, including ones that sound like what you typed, such as colonel for “kernal”.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The site is built for small screens first and works in any modern mobile browser.

Understanding the results

What do the capital letters in the respelling mean?

They mark the stressed syllable. In tuh-MAY-toh, MAY is the part you say loudest and longest.

What are the symbols between slashes?

That is the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which gives every sound its own symbol. Our IPA guide explains each one.

Why are the American and British versions different?

The two accents differ in a few systematic ways, especially the r after vowels and some vowel sounds, and some words also move their stress. Each word page explains the difference for that word.

Is the audio a real person?

No. The audio is high-quality synthesized speech, which lets us cover every word in both accents and two voices. Where audio cannot load, your browser's built-in voice reads the word instead.

Learning and practice

What is the best way to improve my pronunciation?

Little and often works best: look up the words you actually need, listen twice, say them aloud, and revisit the hard ones from My Words.

How many words can I look up?

There are detailed guides for 89,919 common and tricky words, and the tool can pronounce more than 120,000 English words.

Do I need an account?

No. Everything is free and works without signing up. Saved words stay in your own browser.

Can I suggest a word or report a mistake?

Yes, please do. Email hello@howpronounceit.com with the word and what you expected to hear.
