Silent Letters in English: Patterns, Examples, and Pronunciation
Many English words include letters that appear in the spelling but are not spoken. Although silent letters can seem random, most of them follow recognizable patterns. Learning these patterns makes it easier to pronounce unfamiliar words correctly.
Why English has silent letters
Most silent letters were once pronounced. The k in knight and knee was spoken in Old English, and the gh in night represented a sound similar to the ch in the Scottish word loch. Over time, the pronunciation changed while the spelling stayed the same.
Other silent letters were added deliberately. In the 1500s, scholars inserted letters to reflect a word's Latin origin. The b in debt and doubt comes from the Latin words debitum and dubitare, even though it was never pronounced in English.

| wr at the start of a word | w | write, wrong, wrestle |
| gn at the start or end of a word | g | gnome, sign, campaign |
| mb at the end of a word | b | climb, thumb, tomb |
| mn at the end of a word | n | autumn, column, hymn |

The silent h
Several common words begin with a silent h, including hour, honest, honor, and heir. This is why we say "an hour" and "an honest answer." In American English, the h in herb is also silent, while British speakers pronounce it.
Words to learn individually
Some silent letters do not follow a general pattern and need to be learned word by word. Examples include island (silent s), receipt (silent p), salmon (silent l), wednesday (silent d), sword (silent w), and yacht (silent ch). Our list of silent-letter words includes a pronunciation tip for each one.
Use related words as a guide
A silent letter is often pronounced in a longer word from the same family. The g in sign is pronounced in signature, the b in bomb is pronounced in bombard, and the n in condemn is pronounced in condemnation. When you encounter an unusual spelling, related words can help explain it.
Common questions
Which letter is most often silent in English?
The letter e. At the end of words such as make and time, it is not pronounced, but it changes the vowel sound that comes before it.
